Target return without a receipt

Often yes. Target can look up your receipt in store if you paid with a Target Circle Card or a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card. With no proof of purchase at all, you may get a merchandise return card instead of a refund — government ID required.

First: let Target find the receipt

  • Receipts and return barcodes are in your Target account for online orders, and for store purchases paid with a card linked to your account or your Wallet in the Target app.
  • Online orders: your shipping and delivery confirmation emails, or the barcode in your account or the Target app, work as proof of purchase.
  • In store, Guest Services can look up the receipt if you bring the item and the card you paid with, within the item's return window. Lookups work for Target Circle Cards (debit, credit and Mastercard) and Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit cards.

No proof of purchase at all

  • You may get a merchandise return card (MRC) instead of a refund. A government-issued ID is required.
  • An MRC can be used for merchandise or services at Target stores only — not on Target.com, not for gift cards or prepaid cards, and not for cash (except where the law requires).
  • MRC funds don't expire. Target may ask for the same ID when you use it, and the card can't be transferred.

Exceptions

  • Items sold by Target Plus partners always need proof of purchase. Their receipts are emailed when the order ships and again when it's delivered, and you can print one from the order details page.
