Yes — for store purchases, show a valid government-issued photo ID. If it matches Walmart's records, you can exchange the item or get a Walmart gift card. You don't get cash or a card refund without a receipt.

What you need

  • A valid government-issued photo ID. Walmart accepts the return if your ID information matches what's stored in its secured database.
  • The item, within its normal return window (90 days for most items — see the full Walmart return policy).

What you get back

  • An exchange for another item, or
  • A Walmart gift card, or
  • If available, Walmart can send the item to the manufacturer for repair.
  • No refund to cash or your card without the receipt.

Before you give up on the receipt

  • Walmart.com orders: your purchase history shows the latest date each order can be returned — start the return in the Walmart app or online instead of hunting for paper.
  • Card purchases are refunded to the same card. If that's not possible, store purchases get store credit on a Walmart Gift Card or Walmart Balance.
  • Refund timing: up to 7 days to a credit or debit card or PayPal; within 3 hours to a Walmart Gift Card, Walmart Cash or Walmart Balance.
